No better time to plan family photos than the beginning of summer! In this post you will find gorgeous family photos taken at sunset, at a stunning open space in the Walnut Creek. The weather in the Bay Area during summer is without a doubt, the best. Warm summer nights, with a cool breeze is the perfect combo. As a lifestyle family photographer in the Bay Area, I tend to love shooting in the East Bay during the summer months. Often times the weather in San Francisco can be chilly and overcast, so shooting in Walnut Creek or Danville and often times Mt. Diablo, are my fav!

What can you expect at your family session?

It’s pretty simple. When I first started out as a photographer in the Bay Area, I did a lot of posing at my sessions. And while that is certainly an option if that is the style you love, my style has slowly evolved into more candid, emotive and authentic type images. I want your session to reflect the realness in your life, however that may look. Kids won’t sit still or pose perfectly and that’s okay. Don’t worry if they refuse to look at the camera, looking at you is even better!

Best locations in the East Bay of San Francisco for family sessions?

I have a few favorite go-to locations but I am always open if you have somewhere that you want to try out. In fact, often times when a family suggests something new, it usually becomes a new favorite of mine. Mt. Diablo State Park has amazing trails with panoramic views and gorgeous, golden light. Small open spaces like Lime Ridge Open Space also has incredible views and even some rock features. Shell Ridge Open Space is another location I love to shoot at with a family. I love a location that has a good mix of views and also trees to diffuse the light.

What to wear to your family session with me?

This is a loaded question but I’ll give you a few tips. I love warm tones and color. Do not hesitate to mix patterns and prints and add pops of color, texture and layers. Layers, layers, layers! Add a cute hat, a boho cardigan or chunky jewelry. Layers add dimension which can really spice up your photos. I also have the option of using a styling platform called Style & Select. This is service is completely free to you and I highly recommend you take advantage of it. It will really help you visualize different colors, prints and patterns all together as one for your family session. I will often put together my own board for you and then hand over the reigns and let you take a turn with it. It’s so fun to mix and match!

Best time of day for family photos?

THE question! It’s something everyone wants to know because well, little kiddos sometimes can’t stay out super late in the summer. That is why spring and fall is another great option if you have little kids. In the summer, the sun is setting fairly late (8pm+) so if that is too late for your kids, no worries, let’s plan a family photoshoot in the fall when the sun is setting much earlier. That soft, yummy, golden light is my favorite but I am happy to find a location that we can start at earlier, if your family needs that option!
